Short answer: the moon phases meaning most witches work with follows the light. The moon moves through eight phases in about 29.5 days. As the light grows (new moon to full moon) it is a time to begin and build. At the full moon things reach their peak. As the light shrinks (full moon back to dark) it is a time to release, rest and clear space. The dark moon, the stretch when no moon shows at all, is kept for endings, shadow work and listening. Eclipses are the wild cards, and they only happen at a new or full moon.
Below is what is actually happening in the sky at each phase, what each one has come to mean in modern witchcraft, and why the dark moon and the eclipse get treated so differently from everything else.
What causes the moon phases
The moon does not make its own light. Half of it is always lit by the sun, and what changes over the month is how much of that lit half we can see from Earth. When the moon sits between Earth and the sun, the lit side faces away from us and the moon disappears. When Earth sits between the two, we see the whole lit face: a full moon.
One full cycle, from new moon to new moon, takes about 29.5 days. Two words help with everything that follows:
- Waxing means growing. The lit part gets bigger each night.
- Waning means shrinking. The lit part gets smaller each night.
"Gibbous," the phase between a half moon and a full one, comes from a Latin word for hump, which is a fair description of its swollen shape.
The eight moon phases and their meanings
Witches do not all agree on the details, and there is no single rulebook. What follows is the common thread you will find across most modern practice, which grows out of one simple idea: work with the light when it is growing, and let things go when it is fading.
1. New moon
The moon is invisible or nearly so. In astronomy, the new moon is the exact moment the moon lines up with the sun. In practice it is the blank page of the month: a time to name what you want, write intentions, and start small. Many lunar calendars, including the Islamic calendar, begin each month only when the first thin crescent is seen after this point.
2. Waxing crescent
The first sliver appears in the western sky after sunset. Intentions turn into first steps. This is a phase for planting, literally or otherwise.
3. First quarter
Half the moon is lit. It is often read as a point of decision, where the plan meets its first real obstacle and you choose whether to push on.
4. Waxing gibbous
Almost full. A time to refine, adjust and keep going rather than start anything new.
5. Full moon
The whole face is lit and the moon rises as the sun sets. This is the peak: for gratitude, celebration, divination and charging tools or crystals in moonlight. In Wicca, full moon rituals are called esbats, and many witches who skip every other phase still mark this one. Each full moon also carries a folk name. November's is usually called the Beaver Moon, and in 2026 it falls on November 24.
6. Waning gibbous
The light starts to fall away. Often linked with sharing what you have learned and giving thanks.
7. Last quarter
Half lit again, the other side this time. A phase for clearing out: breaking habits, cutting ties, cleaning house.
8. Waning crescent
A thin sliver seen before dawn. Rest, recovery and quiet. The cycle is winding down.
Dark moon vs new moon: why the difference matters
You will see "dark moon" and "new moon" used as if they mean the same thing. Many witches separate them. On this view, the dark moon is the day or so (sometimes up to three days) when no moon can be seen at all, and the new moon begins when the first crescent returns.
The distinction matters because the two feel so different. The new moon is about beginning. The dark moon is about the opposite: endings, grief, banishing, shadow work and divination. It is the night to sit with what you have been avoiding instead of planning what comes next. For witches drawn to Hecate and the dark goddesses, this is often the most important night of the month. If that interests you, our guide to the meaning of Samhain covers why the dark half of the year gets the same respect.
Our Dark Moon design came out of this idea. Its tagline is "In darkness, I find my power," and the artwork shows a black moon over a single candle flame: not an absence, but a space to work in.
Full moon magic and the moon in tarot
The connection between witches and the moon is very old. In ancient Greek writing, the witches of Thessaly were said to be able to "draw down the moon" from the sky. Modern Wicca borrowed the phrase for a full moon rite in which the Goddess is invoked into a priestess.
The moon also runs through the tarot. The High Priestess sits with a crescent at her feet and stands for intuition and hidden knowledge. The Moon card is about dreams, fear and things that are not what they seem. If you want to read those cards side by side with the phases, our guide to The High Priestess, The Moon, The Star and The Tower goes through each one.
Eclipses: lunar, solar and the blood moon
Eclipses only happen at two points in the cycle, and the phase tells you which kind:
- A lunar eclipse can only happen at a full moon, when Earth's shadow falls across the moon.
- A solar eclipse can only happen at a new moon, when the moon passes in front of the sun.
During a total lunar eclipse the moon often turns copper or deep red. That is the "blood moon." The color comes from sunlight bending through Earth's atmosphere, the same effect that makes sunsets red, and spilling onto the moon's surface.
In witchcraft, eclipses are usually treated as unpredictable. Some witches work powerful spells during them; many others choose to rest and observe, on the logic that a full or new moon with its light cut off is not a normal full or new moon. Either way, eclipse energy is usually linked with sudden change, endings that clear the way, and things coming to light.
How to start working with the moon phases
- Track one cycle. Note the date of the next new moon and full moon and just watch. For November 2026, the new moon is November 9 (UTC) and the full moon is November 24.
- Keep it simple. One intention at the new moon, one look back at the full moon, one thing released as it wanes.
- Write it down. A moon journal shows patterns faster than anything else.
- Pull a card. A single tarot card at each new and full moon is an easy habit to keep.
Carry the moon with you
Our Daughters of the Moon collection has four designs built around the lunar cycle: Dark Moon, Full Moon Queen, The Huntress and Lunar Eclipse. Each artwork is UV printed onto vegan leather and made to order, so it takes 5 to 7 days before your bag ships with tracking. Handbags start at $79.95 and come with a free matching long wallet that is added to your cart automatically. If your interest runs more toward planets and stars, see the Cosmic Witch collection, or start smaller with a mini wallet at $29.95.
